Why Human Needs Must Power Asia-Pacific Innovation

Is the Pace of Technological Change Too Fast?

Can we bank on the digital economy as a growth certainty? Or is there a risk that a deterioration in trust and a lack of inclusivity in its rewards will derail its progress? With technology being an integral part of peoples everyday lives, how should businesses strike a balance between meeting consumers’ digital needs and combating the negative effect of technology on their well-being?

Despite people’s optimism regarding what technology can deliver tomorrow, there is a growing digital backlash today. In fact, seven out of 10 people in Asia Pacific believe that the pace of technological change is too fast while two-thirds of people believe that not enough is being done to ensure technology benefits all in society. How then, can we ensure digital and technological innovations meet fundamental human needs?

Smart Nation Imperatives from the Digital Society Index

Denstu Aegis Network Keynote at Innovfest Unbound

Can we bank on the digital economy as a growth certainty? Or is there a risk that a deterioration in trust and a lack of inclusivity in its rewards will derail its progress?

The Digital Society Index ranks countries across three dimensions of the digital economy: dynamism, inclusion and trust. It contrasts top down, "national level" metrics of digitalisation against "bottom up" indicators of consumer sentiment, informed by a global survey of over 43,000 people in collaboration with Oxford Economics.

Singapore tops the 2019 rankings on the Digital Society Index across the 24 countries surveyed ahead of US and China yet in stark contrast to this, has the lowest psychological need score of all markets surveyed.

With technology being an integral part of peoples everyday lives, how should businesses strike a balance between meeting consumers’ digital needs and combating the negative effect of technology on their well-being?

In his keynote, Arvind Sethumadhavan, Dentsu Aegis Network’s Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer, will share key findings from the 2019 Digital Society Index report and discuss with an expert panel implications of the findings to Singapore’s standing to further tackle challenges around inclusion and trust.
